Rape, robbery, kidnapping cases up in trains; murder, dacoity down
Cases of murder and dacoity have lowered in 2015 as against 2014 in railways.
New Delhi: Cases of rape, robbery, kidnapping and theft in Railways have increased during the current year as compared to the previous year, Minister of State for Railways Manoj Sinha informed the Lok Sabha on Wednesday.
Sinha, however, said the reported cases of murder and dacoity have lowered in 2015 as against 2014.
As many as 43 cases of rape were reported in the Railways till October this year as against 22 cases in previous year, while the number of robbery cases stood at 1,127 in January-October period of 2015 against 1,040 in 2014.
Reported cases of kidnapping stood at 101 during the first 10 months of current year against 87 in last year, whereas 18,794 cases of theft were reported till October this year as compared to 17,293 in last year.
Murder cases, however, declined with 144 cases reported till October 2015 as compared to 195 last year, while dacoity cases dropped to 62 during the first 10 months of the current year as compared to 75 cases in the previous year.
"The reason behind the increase in cases of crime are increase in volume of passenger and traffic, and better awareness amongst the public for registration of cases," the minister said.
He also informed that as many as 4,557 children were rescued in January-October period this year.
Meanwhile, Sinha said there has been a proposal to set up CCTV surveillance system over 1,000 stations through provision of grants from Nirbhaya Fund in phases.
