Mumbai shamed: Manipuri woman assaulted on a busy street as `public` looked on
`Because of our Northeast facial features, people believe that we are from China or Nepal.`
Mumbai: In an incident that has shamed Mumbai and Mumbaikars, a Manipuri woman was allegedly assaulted in Mumbai's Santacruz but the police refused to file an FIR for days before being forced due to media outrage.
The 26-year-old woman was accosted by an unknown man on Saturday evening and allegedly spat at her. When she objected, he kicked, punched and dragged by the hair on the busy road.
The woman said that the man tore her clothes and even tried to molest her.
None of the onlookers intervened to save the woman.
The victims' sister told Mid-Day: “The woman’s sister said they often faced a lack of compassion and discrimination for their features. Because of our Northeast facial features, people believe that we are from China or Nepal. Because of this discrimination, no one came to my sister’s rescue.”
