Twitter faces flak from French Gay rights group over `trending anti-gay hashtag`
Twitter has again garnered the limelight all for the wrong reasons when gay rights groups in France declared filing lawsuits against the site for not taking any action against the trending anti-gay topic on its platform.
French gay rights groups have been angered with the emergence of `#LesGaysDoiventDispairatreCar which means `Gay people must die/disappear because` which topped the `trending topics` over the weekend, The Local reports. The gay rights group SOS Homophobie has launched an online campaign against the site while The French committee of the International Day Against Homophobia and Transphobia (IDAHO) has declared that it will be filing a lawsuit against the site for allowing the `diffusion of a call for hatred against gay people`.
IDAHO`s Alexandre Marcel slammed the site for not deleting a single homophobic tweet or removing a single homophobic hashtag from its list of most popular trending terms and said that it is a blatant call for the death and murder of gay people. The report added that another hashtag, #TeamHomophobes also appeared over the weekend and on Monday, the hashtag #BrulonsLesGaysSurDu `Let`s burn gay people` appeared to be gaining momentum on the site.
This is the latest in a series of controversies regarding Twitter`s ability to handle hate speech on its site as recently female users have faced rape and death threats on the platform after which the site announced the inclusion of a `report abuse` button which was previously unavailable. ANI
