Amongst such serious subjects, Twitters' number one event was regarding British pop-band One Direction following the departure of Zayn Malik. The news event was retweeted 726,009 times around the world.
Other key events included the Fergusun shooting, the affirmation of gay marriage in the USA and Caitlyn Jenner's introduction.
