UK`s first bus powered by biomethane takes to the streets of Bristol

New Delhi: It seems that we have finally found the key to 'clean' energy down in a sewer. In a first, UK has introduced buses that run on biomethane gas extracted from human waste and food waste.

The 40-seater eco-friendly vehicle can travel up to 180 miles on one tank of gas produced by annual waste of five people. The Bio-Bus is believed to improve air quality.

The gas is being produced at the Wessex Water sewerage plant run by energy firm GENeco.

On its maiden voyage, passengers travelled on the route from Bristol Airport to Bath, Somerset.

Mohammed Saddiq, Director of GENeco was quoted as saying, “Gas powered vehicles have an important role to play in improving air quality in UK cities.”

'But the Bio-Bus goes further than that and is actually powered by people living in the local area, including quite possibly those on the bus itself.'

Compared to diesel, biomethane is a giant green step forward as it emits less Nitrogen-Dioxide.
