Maryam Mirzakhani becomes first woman to win `Nobel Prize of maths`
Iranian-born mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani on Wednesday became the first woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal this year.

New Delhi: Iranian-born mathematician Maryam Mirzakhani on Wednesday became the first woman to win the prestigious Fields Medal this year.
Mirzakhani is the first woman to win the prize, which is regarded as the mathematics` equivalent to the Nobel Prize. It was established in the year 1936 by Canadian mathematician John Fields. She is recognised for her work in understanding the relationship between topology and dynamical systems. The 37-year-old Iranian is a professor of mathematics at Stanford University in California. International Mathematical Union (IMU) gave away the award to Mirzhakhani at the International Congress of Mathematicians meet held in Seoul. The event is held every four years.
Also, among the winners were three more recipients namely Professor Martin Hairer from Warwick University, Manjul Bhargava from Princeton University and a resercher namely Artur Avila from Institute of Mathematics of Jussieu in Paris.
