In a letter to Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif the clerics, including Pakistan Sunni Tehrik head Sarwat Ejaz Qadri, have requested him to abolish life imprisonment under the blasphemy clause of Pakistan Penal Code. "We want the government to abolish life imprisonment in this case as a blasphemer only deserves death," they wrote in the letter. Sunni clerics have been pressing the government for more strict legislation in blasphemy cases.
