The attack that killed 20 soldiers and injured 30 others took place as a vehicle laden with explosives was detonated in the military area in Bannu.
The attack was claimed by Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan with its spokesperson Shahidullah Shahid warning to stage more attacks in the future.

He said that the attack was in retaliation to the killings of Taliban chief Hakimullah Mehsud and his deputy Wali-ur-Rehman Mehsud, who were killed under “the pretext of the dialogue", reported local media.  "We claim responsibility for the attack, which was part of our fight against a secular system," he told a news agency.

"We will carry out more such attacks in future,” he added.

Hakimullah Mehsud and his deputy Wali-ur-Rehman Mehsud were killed by US drones in Pakistan`s restive tribal region of North Waziristan, however the military outfit has declared to retaliate against the military forces of Pakistan.

"We are of the view that the government has no powers and sincerity in the talks, otherwise our senior leaders would not have been killed after the peace dialogue offer," the Taliban spokesman said.
