New Delhi: As astronaut Scott Kelly and Russian cosmonaut Mikhail Kornienko returned after spending a year in space, here are some incredible, yet crazy facts about their year aboard the International Space Station (ISS)
143, 846, 525 statute miles travelled: According to NASA, Kelly and Kornienko traveled over 143 million miles, conducting research, preparing for the agency's journey to Mars, which will be about 140,000,000 miles from Earth.
5,440 orbits around the Earth: Traveling at a speed of 5 miles per second, the ISS orbits the Earth every 90 minutes.
Nine visiting spacehips: Nine visiting space vehicles namely- 3 Russian resupply ships, 1 Japanese HTV resupply ship, 1 SpaceX Dragon resupply ship, 1 Orbital ATK Cygnus resupply ship, 3 Soyuz crew vehicles – delivered food, supplies, experiments and more crew members to the space station.
10, 944 sunrises and sunsets: Since the space station is orbiting the Earth at 17,500 miles per hour, the crew onboard sees 16 sunrises and sunsets each day, whereas you only see 684.
730 liters of recycled urine, sweat consumed: As water is a precious and limited resource in space, crew members recycle it whenever possible. In this case, crew members have to recycle their own urine for usage.
