Chennai: Ongoing probe into the broad daylight murder of a Dalit youth in Tirupur of Tamil Nadu has revealed that Rs 50 thousand were paid to some miscreants to kill him.
The 23-year-old Dalit man, identified as V Sankar, was hacked to death by three assailants at a busy marketplace in broad daylight at Tirupur on Sunday afternoon.
The victim had married 19-year-old Kausalya some eight months ago against her parents' wishes.
According to reports, the three attackers dragged the victim from the pavement before hacking him to death. The bike-borne attackers managed to escape after the incident even as several local watched.
The attackers also assaulted Kausalya, which has been admitted to a hospital where she is said to be out of danger.
So far four people have been arrested in connection with the case and an investigation is on to nab the remaining culprits.
The attack had once again highlighted the scourge of casteism that is still prevalent in the country, despite progress in the education and economic front.
Left and Dalit groups in Tamil Nadu had called for a statewide stir on March 16 to protest against the gruesome murder of a Scheduled Caste man for allegedly marrying a girl from the upper caste.
Left and Dalit organisations would stage demonstrations in different parts of the state on March 16.
