"I urge the police department to also engage themselves in giving protection to the ordinary people and strongly condemn them for not doing so," he said.

Referring to the suicide of a young woman in Salem after her morphed picture was uploaded on Facebook, Karunanidhi sarcastically said, "The police department should not think that providing security to those in power and monitoring activities of the opposition parties alone is its work."

Police had faced flak over the suicide issue, as the victim's parents alleged inaction and demand of bribe.

The DMK chief also referred to Madras High Court's directive to Tamil Nadu government yesterday over the issue and several queries it had raised on security aspects.

Karunanidhi conveyed his condolences to the bereaved families of both women.
