It was then this middle-aged Muslim woman who stepped in and performed his last rites with full Hindu rituals.

K Srinivas worked as a tailor for years but when he died in her care home on Tuesday night, Yakub Bi was more than obliged to do the right thing!

Srinivas had lived at her old-age home for many years and when his immediate family members refused to come for his cremation, Bi decided to do it herself.

Yakub Bi found him two years ago at a bus stop, partially paralyzed. He told that her that he had been abandoned by his family.

But only after his death that Bi was able to locate his son, Sharath.

He told Bi that because he had converted to Christianity, he could not follow Hindu rituals for his father's funeral.

So Yakub Bi walked around the funeral pyre with an earthen pot on her shoulder. She played the role traditionally reserved for the dead person's oldest son. Surrounding her were most of the seniors she cares for, NDTV reported.
