Chandigarh: Famously known as the City of Gardens, Chandigarh has another feather in its cap.

It has been summed up as the only successful perfect city in the world.


Noting that history is littered with failed ideal cities, Jonathan Glancey of the BBC said that “of all the world’s ideal cities, Chandigarh has done remarkably well, offering striking monumental architecture, a grid of self-contained neighbourhoods, more trees than perhaps any Indian city and a way of life that juggles tradition with modernity.”


 


“While history tells us ideal cities are mostly best left on paper, Chandigarh – perhaps one of the least likely – appears to have succeeded against the grain,” Glancey concluded.


Chandigarh, the well-planned city, is the capital of two state governments, Punjab and Haryana.


Also, Chandigarh has been rated as the “Wealthiest Town” of India, said a government website. 


The city, located at the foothills of Shivaliks, was planned by the famous French architect Le Corbusier.
