Naik termed it a "heart rending incident" and said he was confident that the state would overcome the situation.

Iqlakh, 50, was beaten to death and his 22-year-old son Danish was critically injured by a 200-strong mob which had barged into their house on Monday night following rumours that the family had consumed beef in a Dadri village on the outskirts of Delhi.

"The government has started taking action, but the people should also extend their support in this process," Naik told reporters when asked about Dadri incident on the sidelines of an event here.

"I believe maintaining peace is the reply to the situation. It is my appeal to people of the state," he said.
