National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Saturday castigated Aligarh police for its alleged inept handling of the violent protests triggered after the rape and murder of 6-yr-old dalit girl here.
Aligarh: National Commission for Scheduled Castes on Saturday castigated Aligarh police for its alleged inept handling of the violent protests triggered after the rape and murder of a six-year-old dalit girl here.
"Had police acted with restraint and tact when they had gone to collect the girl` dead body from her house for conducting the post mortem, the ugly turn of events would definitely have been averted," Chairman of National Commission for Scheduled Castes P L Punia told PTI today.
Punia today visited members of the bereaved family at Nagla Kalar locality here. He called for immediate registration of criminal cases against two Deputy Superintendents of Police for allegedly indulging in brutalities against those were protesting against police behaviour following the recovery of the girl`s dead body near a garbage dump in a locality adjoining her house.
Punia alleged that the two DSP A K Singh and Sansar Singh had reportedly behaved in a highly irresponsible manner and inhuman manner while trying to control the protesters especially the women.
He said that cases under the SC Protection Act would also be filed against them on the basis of the complaint that the two had used derogatory language while beating up the protesters including the mother and grandmother of the victim.
Punia demanded that Uttar Pradesh government should pay a compensation of at least RS 20 lakh as relief to the victim`s family.
He said that he would be actively monitoring the action taken report (ATR) in this matter in the next few days.
The minor girl went missing on April 17 and later her body was recovered at a garbage dump in Nagla Kalar area here, police said, as the crime sparked violent protests by locals prompting police to use force.
A post mortem report has confirmed rape, police said.
TV footage on April 18 showed an officer rushing towards an unarmed elderly woman and pushing her down using his baton during a lathicharge to quell protests.
Later, taking note of the incident Chief minister Akhilesh Yadav suspended Circle Officer (Civil Lines) A K Singh, who allegedly knocked down the unidentified elderly woman and two other policemen. PTI
