Confirming the report, one of the officials told IANS that decision was taken to maintain harmony at the campus.

Tension had prevailed in the varsity following a statement issued by Dalit thinker Kancha Ilayya at Hyderabad recently, that eating beef was beneficial for health, after which the decision to ban non-vegetarian food at BBAU was taken.

Protests erupted at BBAU after Ilayya's statement on beef first appeared on April 14.

The ban has come into force and only vegetarian dishes would be served at the varsity mess. University spokesman Kamal Jaiswal said that special occasional demands for non-veg food would also not be entertained.

Yesterday, around 200 students led a march in the varsity calling the decision to ban non-veg food as 'anti-Dalit' and sought withdrawal of the decision.
