New Delhi: As Lance Naik Hanumanthappa Koppad - who was miraculously found alive after remaining buried under huge mass of snow for six days at the Siachen Glacier - is battling for his life, a special prayer was conducted on Tuesday evening at Ganga Ghat in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh, for his quick recovery.

Doctors said the soldier from Karnataka, who along with nine other colleagues of the Madras Regiment had been assumed dead, was in "extremely critical" condition at the Army Research and Referral Hospital here.


A medical bulletin said Koppad, who was flown to Delhi today, was in shock with low blood pressure and was on ventilator in the ICU. The next one or two days were critical for him. 


Late last night, a rescue team that had been chipping away at ice for days, found Koppad and was astonished to feel a faint pulse in him.


Koppad was flown from Siachen Glacier today morning in a special air ambulance and admitted to the Army Research and Referral Hospital.


After an avalanche on February 3, Lance Naik Hanamanthappa and nine other soldiers were buried deep under the snow. A wall of ice, a kilometer wide and 800 metres high, came crashing down on their post.
