Mob ransacks West Bengal police station
Alleging that the accident occurred only because policemen had chased the dumper to extort money from the driver, a large number of people staged demonstration at the spot deriding the police.
Kolkata: Enraged over a man getting killed by a speeding truck, a mob on Friday ransacked a police station and torched several vehicles in West Bengal's Birbhum district.
The incident happened in Mayureshwar in the district after a dumper mowed down a man.
Alleging that the accident occurred only because policemen had chased the dumper to extort money from the driver, a large number of people staged demonstration at the spot deriding the police.
With police trying to remove the dead body, the villagers pelted stones at them and subsequently ransacked the Mayureswar police station and torched several vehicles.
The incident comes days after a protest in Malda district turned violent leading to a mob attacking a police station and setting ablaze several vehicles including those belonging to the Border Security Force.
The Bharatiya Janata Party has demanded a central probe into the January 3 Malda incident.
