Durgapur (WB): Equating the situation prevailing in West Bengal with that of Delhi in 1977, External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj on Sunday predicted a resounding defeat for Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in upcoming assembly polls, saying she would suffer the same fate as then Prime Minister Indira Gandhi.

Swaraj also said TMC government in West Bengal has become synonymous with corruption and claimed that the flyover collapse in Kolkata proved the depths of corruption into which the TMC government has sunk.

"In 1977, people of India kept quiet but delivered a crushing defeat to Indira Gandhi in the general election. The same thing is being repeated in Bengal with Mamata Banerjee. The people of Bengal are keeping silent and Mamata will meet the same fate as Indira Gandhi," Swaraj said during an election meeting here.

"The Mamata Banerjee government is now suspended between Saradha and Narada. The TMC government has become synonymous with 'bhrashtachar' (corruption)," the BJP leader said.

She said Mamata used to rush to Delhi when she was not in power in Bengal, asking the national-level leaders to help her partymen from attacks by the CPI(M).

"But the moment she assumed power, she changed and did nothing as her party men attacked BJP workers," Swaraj said.

Ten BJP candidates have so far filed nomination papers in the district.
