New Delhi: The funeral of former Israeli President Shimon Peres, who passed away on Wednesday, will be held on Friday in Jerusalem, the Israeli embassy here said.

"The funeral ceremony for former President of Israel, Shimon Peres, will take place on Friday, September 30, at noon on Mount Herzl in Jerusalem," the embassy said in a statement. 

"From tomorrow (Thursday), the former President's coffin will be lying in state at the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) for the public to pay their respects," it stated. 

The embassy said it would open open a condolence book in New Delhi on Thursday afternoon, Friday and next week on Wednesday (October 5) and Thursday (October 6). 

The Israeli flag at the embassy has been lowered to half-mast. 

According to the statement, among the world leaders expected to attend the funeral are US President Barack Obama, former US President Bill Clinton and and his wife and former US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton , Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, Prince Charles of Britain, and French President Francois Hollande.

Peres passed away in a hospital outside Tel Aviv on Wednesday morning. He was 93.

A Nobel Peace Prize laureate and one of the most central figures in Israeli politics, he died two weeks after he suffered a stroke.

He had been sedated and on respirator since he suffered a stroke on September 13 and hospitalised at the Chaim Sheba Medical Centre outside Tel Aviv.
