Peshawar: Four members of a gang allegedly involved in importing sub standard liver meat from India to Pakistan were on Sunday arrested and tonnes of meat seized during a raid here.

The district administration and officials of the Food Department in a joint raid seized tonnes of liver meat and sealed the warehouses where it was stored in Gulbahar and Haji Camp areas of Peshawar city. 


District Nazim Peshawar Muhammad Asim initiated the action after receiving complaints that daily one container of imported liver meat from India was being dumpedin the warehouses in Peshawar city and within hours supplied to eateries in Mardan, Kohat and other districts of Khyber Pakthunkhwa. 


The officials raided the suspected warehouses and seized tonnes of sub standard liver meat and also nabbed four members of the gang, an official said. 


The liver meat is first imported to the UAE from India and then to Karachi and after that reaches Peshawar in 45 days. The meat is almost rotten and stinks when it reaches Peshawar, he added. 


In July this year around 160 kilo grams of liver meat imported from India was destroyed by authorities in Peshawar city.
