Santa Claus steered his reindeer-driven sleigh from the North Pole at around 6 am ET on Wednesday to embark on his Christmas eve journey across the globe and how could he miss the world's largest democracy, India.

As Santa's sleigh cruised through the global skies, NORAD was up and running, tracking St. Nick's wagon as it passed over different landscapes, dropping Christmas presents.

NORAD, which tracks Santa using satellites and radars, keeps posting minute-by-minute location of Santa on its website and its popularity on social media has hit the roof.

NORAD Tracks Santa has already attracted around 1.6 million Facebook "likes" and 155K followers on Twitter.

The volunteers at NORAD will spend their Wednesday answering phone calls and emails from children across the gobe and posting details of Santa's mythical trip on Facebook, Twitter and www.NORADSanta.org.

NORAD is the joint US-Canada command with its control room at Peterson Air Force Base, and Colorado Springs. NORAD is responsible for defending the skies and monitoring the sea approaches for both nations.
