Damaturu: At least 14 people were killed in a suicide attack in Yobe state on late Tuesday as the victims were watching World Cup match at an outdoor viewing centre in Damaturu town.
The explosives were hidden in a tricycle taxi which was detonated by the suicide bomber as people watched the World Cup match between Brazil and Mexico.
The witnesses have claimed that several people have been killed in the attack and the number is expected to increase. While the police has confirmed the attack, they are yet to provide any details.
No one has claimed the responsibility of the attack.
Suspecting it to be an attack by Islamist militants Boko Haram, the police is fearing a second bomb attack in the area. The attack took place even as over 250 schoolgirls continue to be held hostage for over two months by Boko Haram who leader Abubakar Shekau has threatened to sell them if the government does not agree to exchange them for detained extremists.
While the Nigeria`s military claims to be aware about the location of the kidnapped girls, they are not taking any action as they fear that any military operation could get them killed.
