Ticino: Muslim women found wearing burqa in Switzerland are likely to face a hefty fine following the implementation of new law which puts a complete ban on veils.
The local government of Ticino province, the Italian-speaking region in southern Switzerland, has passes the law with an overwhelming majority. The law was backed by the two in three voters.
The law also has a provision of about $9,835 fine if someone is found flouting it. The new rules also apply on the tourists visiting the region.
People are allowed to wear other head coverings like balaclavas, helmets and masks except burqas.
However, there was no confirmation on the exact dates for the implementation of the law.
Human rights groups and Amnesty International have condemned the new law and called its adoption a 'black day' for human rights.
