India began vaccination drive on January 16, 2021

India started its national programme against COVID-19 on January 16 2021. 

Antonio Guterres, Secretary-General, United Nations has praised the programme and said that Indian vaccine production capacity is the best asset our world has. 

The vaccination drive has prioritised frontline workers and healthcare professionals. The vaccination drive also gives preference to the elderly i.e., over the age of 60 years.

DCGI has passed Covishield and Covaxin for use in India

According to health officials, India has successfully administered 3,71,43,255 doses of vaccine across the country till March 16, 2021.

The Drug Controller General of India (DCGI) has passed two vaccines for the programme. The first is Covishield, which is developed by the University of Oxford.

The second vaccine is Covaxin, which is developed by Bharat Biotech in association with the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Institute of Virology (NIV).

Phase two of the vaccination drive is for senior citizens above 60 years of age

Phase one of the vaccination drive consisted of frontline workers and healthcare professionals. 

Phase two of the vaccination drive is for senior citizens above 60 years of age.

The drive also includes citizens aged from 45 to 60 years with comorbidities.

India has covered more than 10 million beneficiaries over 60 years

According to the data published by the Union health ministry, India has covered more than 10 million beneficiaries over 60 years with the vaccination in just 15 days. 

Union Minister Prakash Javadekar said that "The COVID-19 vaccine will be available across 10,000 government facilities and many private hospitals."

A 109-year-old woman in Jalaun becomes oldest person to get covid-vaccine

Ram Dulhaiya of Veerpura village becomes the oldest woman to get the corona vaccine in the country.

According to relatives, the age of the woman is 115 years while in the papers 109 years.

District administration honoured the oldest woman as she gets the COVID Vaccine. 

The first dose of the COVID-19 vaccine was given to her at Community Health Center, Jalaun.

103-year-old JJ Kamleshwari from Bangalore held this record

A 103-year-old woman from Bangalore held this title before Ram Dulhaiya. 

JJ Kamaleshwari was given the first dose of the vaccine and she became the oldest woman to get vaccinated in India. 

However, 109-year-old Ram Dulhaiya from Jalaun has broken her record.
