The 26-year-old's chances of playing in the third Test were thrown into doubt after he failed to bowl last weekend in New Zealand's practice match against Western Australia.

Coach Mike Hesson said that Boult has passed the first stage of fitness after bowling eight overs, including five at full intensity but admitted that they would take a final call regarding the left-hander's availability on Thursday, the Sydney Morning Herald reported.

Boult, who has been suffering from a 'disc irritation', also bowled two impressive short-pitched deliveries at McCullum in the nets.
