Among those who had applied, Ravi Shastri was the most high-profile name with Sandip Patil also showing an interest for the same.

But things seem to have changed since Monday, after the Indian board confirmed that former spin legend Anil Kumble too, has thrown his hat into the ring.

Kumble, who is presently the Chairman of the ICC (International Cricket Council) cricket committee, sent his application by email to the BCCI.

The former maverick leggie is believed to be one of the most reputed legends to have played the game, and Team India would be blessed to have a coach like him.

Fondly known as Jumbo, Kumble has played 132 Tests and 271 ODIs for India where he claimed 619 wickets in Tests and 337 wickets in ODIs.

On the other hand, keep in mind his 18-month sint with the Indian cricket team, it won't be easy for the board to sideline Shastri, as Indian team performed pretty well during his tenure.

Venkatesh Prasad, Vikram Rathour, Pravin Amre, Balwinder Singh Sandhu, Surendra Bhave and Hrishikesh Kanitkar are all among those interested in the job.

In total, 57 experienced candidates have applied for the position.

While there are plenty of names to be considered, it remains to be seen whether BCCI will finalise one between Shastri and Kumble.
