`Financier of Qaeda`s Yemen branch killed`
A senior Yemen security official said Wednesday that the financier of Yemen`s Al-Qaeda branch was killed in an air strike on Sunday in the northeast of the country.
Sanaa: A senior Yemen security official said Wednesday that the financier of Yemen`s Al-Qaeda branch was killed in an air strike on Sunday in the northeast of the country.
Mohammed Said al-Omda, also known as Abu Gharib Taizi, believed to be the chief financier of the terror network in Yemen, was killed in the raid that left two other people dead, the security official said, cited by the state news agency SABA.
Omda was considered number four in the group`s Yemen branch, known as Al-Qaeda in the Arabian Peninsula, the same source added.
Sunday`s raid, carried out by a US drone according to witnesses, targeted several vehicles travelling on a desert road in the Samda region between the provinces of Jouf and Marib. A missile set ablaze and destroyed the three men`s car.
Omda was among 23 prisoners held in Sanaa who escaped from prison via a tunnel in Feburary 2006.
He had been sentenced to 12 years in prison in 2004, for plotting to carry out attacks against Yemeni official and foreign embassies.
Earlier on Tuesday, Yemen`s President Abdrabuh Mansur Hadi held talks with FBI Director Robert Mueller in Sanaa on the growing threat from Al-Qaeda in Yemen, which Washington considers the global network`s most active branch, SABA reported.
