Colombo: Sri Lanka`s Election Commission on Wednesday announced scrapping of the registration of the People`s Front of Liberation Tigers (PFLT), the political party of the now-vanquished LTTE, along with two other groups.

Eelam National Democratic Front (ENDLF) and National Unity Alliance (NUA), which was a broader political front formed by the country`s main Muslim party Sri Lanka Muslim Congress, are the two other parties whose registration was scrapped. The Election Commission said their scrapping was caused by their failure to file returns in terms of the Elections Act of 1981.
As a result, the number of registered political parties have been reduced to 67.

PFLT was registered as the political wing of the LTTE in 1989 during their brief period of talks with the then government. But, they were not able to contest any of the succeeding elections. The LTTE, which usually advocated boycott of elections, fielded proxies at times.
The Tigers was militarily defeated in 2009.
