Dhaka: The Bangladesh government is keen to send thousands of workers to Libya after the death of Muammar Gaddafi, a minister said.
"We`ve already made contact with the transitional authorities of Libya," Expatriates` Welfare and Overseas Employment Minister Khandker Mosharraf Hossain was quoted as saying by Xinhua. "We would be able to send tens of thousands of workers as there is a need of huge workforce to rebuild war-torn Libya," he said.
There were an estimated 60,000 Bangladeshi nationals in Libya when the rebellion against Gaddafi broke out early this year. Nearly 36,000 Bangladeshis reportedly returned home from Libya after violence worsened. Bangladesh officially recognised on October 13 the National Transitional Council as the authority of Libya.
The Ministry of Foreign Affairs said in a statement that Bangladesh stood ready to support Libya`s reconstruction process in the interest of a brighter future.
