Freak on-field incident leaves another Bengal cricketer hospitalized

New Delhi: After yet another freak incident on a cricket field, Bengal batsman Writam Porel was on Friday hospitalized during a club match..

According to a report on ESPNCricinfo, he was hospitalized after being hit behind his left ear while fielding at forward short leg.

The incident took place during final of the AN Ghosh Trophy, organized by Cricket Association of Bengal, between East Bengal and Bhowanipore.

Bhowanipore batsman Prinan Datta's pull shot led to the ball hitting Porel, who had tuned to protect himself, at the close-in position.

Though the 26-year-old was wearing a helmet, the ball struck under his left ear.

"It was paining but I was conscious. Fortunately we were playing at the Eden Gardens so there was an ambulance," Porel told the cricket website.

Porel was rushed to the Nightingale Hospital, where the doctors told he would be informed about the MRI scan by Saturday afternoon.

Incidentally it is the same hospital where another young Bengal cricketer Ankit Keshri had passed away.

The former Bengal Under-19 captain died of a cardiac arrest in the hospital after an on-field collision with a teammate.

Ankit too played for the same East Bengal club and his fatal incident had occurred against the same opponents Bhowanipore.

"I was scared because Ankit was my team-mate, but it is all right. I'm fine. The doctors have told me there might be a partial tear but nothing about any injury to my brain," said Porel who has played 10 first-class matches for Bengal between 2010 and 2012.
