Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah on Monday proposed the idea of transportation using river Jhelum to relieve the pressure on the roads of Srinagar city which frequently face traffic snarl.
The Chief Minister said the idea of water transport needs to be translated into a reality as soon as possible. "Launch of water transport in Srinagar city would relieve pressure on surface transport to a greater extent and provide facilities to the general public and tourists to move around in the city," Omar said while chairing a high-level meeting here.
The roads in the summer capital here often face traffic jams as poorly planned roads fail to meet the rush of ever-growing number of vehicles.
Omar said Jehlum river, which snakes through most of the city, possesses "good potential" for water transportation. The Chief Minister was also briefed at the meeting about the radio taxi scheme prepared by the Transport Department for the twin cities of Srinagar and Jammu.
Omar directed the scheme be placed before the people for two weeks to get a public response before a final notification is issued.
