Abuja: Eight persons were killed on Sunday in a suicide bomb attack at a police checkpoint in Nigeria`s northeastern city of Damaturu.
The attack came just as the leader of Islamic radical sect Boko Haram chided the United States for including him in the list of global terrorists in a released video.
"Six soldiers and two civilians were killed when the bomber drove his car and could not be stopped before he ran into them", police said.
"One of the civilians died on his way to the hospital", police spokesman Patrick Egbuniwe said.
In a separate incident, suspected members of the sect shot dead a former commissioner for environment Kadiri Kaza`a and an immigration officer Mohammed Lawan in neighbouring city of Maiduguri, police said. Meanwhile, an online Youtube video purportedly released by the leader of Boko Haram Abubakar Shekau has criticised the US for including the latter in the list of global terrorists.
The sect leaders called US President Barack Obama a "terrorist" in the next world in a 38-minute video recorded in Hausa language which is spoken in Nigeria`s north and several other West African countries.
Addressing Nigeria`s President Goodluck Jonathan, Shekau said he should relinquish power and quit Christianity besides mentioning Obama in the video.
"I call on you Goodluck Jonathan, you should abandon this ungodly power, you should repent, repent and forsake Christianity, including Obama, who said I have business interests in the United States", he said. "I know the United States exists, but I don`t know which part of the world it is located in, whether in the west or the north, the south or the east. I don`t know where it is, not to talk of freezing my assets there", he said.
Boko Haram, a local terror group, carries out frequent attacks in northern Nigeria.
The group has been waging a sustained war in Nigeria`s northern cities in their bid to install an Islamic emirate in the country.
