Since England opted to bat first after winning the toss at Chepauk stadium, Dawson understood that his experience of 117 First Class matches and nearly 6000 runs will be put to test first.

It was just his second ball after coming on for the departed Jos Buttler when Ishant Sharma struck him with a nasty bouncer.

It was pitched short, just outside off and as Dawson tried to avoid it, the ball went on to hit the helmet. The England physio was quickly out to check if the batsman was alright.

At Lunch on Day 2, Liam Dawason had put on 27 runs on board as England looked strong despite early blows in the morning session.
