After spin twins Ravichandran Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja shared all ten England wickets, Murali Vijay and Cheteshwar Pujara dropped anchor in Mumbai to keep India's chance of three back-to-back wins alive on Friday.

Second day's play of the fourth Test match resumed with Ben Stokes on 25 and Jos Buttler on 18. The visitors could add only nine runs to their overnight score of 288/5 as Ashwin snared Stokes' wicket in a controversial fashion in only the third over yesterday.

Ashwin completed his 23rd five-wicket haul, to level with Kapil Dev. Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh are the only Indians ahead of Ashwin now in the list of most five-wicket hauls.

His spin partner, Ravindra Jadeja joined the party picking three more wickets, even as Ashwin took another for his sixth. Indian pacers Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Umesh Yadav and offspiner Jayant Yadav returned wicket-less.

For England, Jos Buttler and Jake Ball (31 off 60) added crucial 54 runs for the ninth wicket to help the visitors reached the 400-run mark. Buttler who made (76 off 137) also had a productive sixth-wicket stand with Stokes (31 of 92).

In response, Indian openers KL Rahul and Vijay laid a decent foundation of 39 runs. But Rahul fell to Adil Rashid, bowled, in the 14th over.

Vijay and new man Cheteshwar Pujara then dropped anchor to avoid further slump. They added 107 runs for the second wicket to reduce the first innings gap to 254 with nine wickets remaining.

India were 146/1 with Vijay and Pujara unbeaten on 70 and 47 respectively.
