Ravi Shastri lashes out at Virat Kohli for flop show in 1st innings at Eden Gardens
Virat Kohli was removed by Trent Boult on a mere total of 9 runs.
Kolkata: Former India team director and a famed all-rounder of his time Ravi Shastri said captain Virat Kohli would be disappointed with his shot selection in the last few innings.
"I think he will be disappointed with his shot selection in the last few innings. He has played shots which he could have avoided," Shastri told during lunch on Day I of the second Test against New Zealand at the Eden Gardens here on Friday.
Asked whether India`s premier batsman is banking on his batting skills to go all guns blazing for every ball, Shastri said it could be the other way round. Full Coverage (IND vs NZ)
"It can also be the other way round. If you`re out of form, you tend to get on quickly. You look for boundaries to build your confidence and search for a boundary early on," he added.
Virat Kohli was steadying the shaken Indian ship with a set Cheteshwar Pujara, but Trent Boult got the better of the Indian Test captain when he was on 9 runs.
Kohli got carried away after an exquisite cover drive that was cheered by the small turnout and went for an IPL-like shot chasing a ball way outside the off-stump to be caught brilliantly by Tom Latham. Thus raising questions of his shot selection in the Test format.
Thanks to a splendid partnership by Pujara (87) and Rahane (77) that India managed to reach the 239-run mark at stumps on Day 1 which was dominated by New Zealand baring the duo's performance. Though, Rahane later iterated that he and Puajara must have continued to bat and it was dissapointing that both failed to convert their resepctive innings into a hundred.
Boult, who continued to test the Indian batsmen throughout the day, could only manage 1 wicket on first day of play, which was of Virat Kohli.
