The 26-year-old missed Nottinghamshire's pre-season fixture against Cambridge MCC with what appeared at the time a viral condition.

However, scans revealed that the right-hander is in fact suffering from Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Arrhythmia (ARVC), and needs an operation.

Taking to social micro-blogging site Twitter, Taylor called it the toughest week of his life.

"Myself and all of James' team-mates and colleagues are terribly sad to hear this news, which comes as a big shock to us al,'' Nottinghamshire director of cricket Mick Newell was quoted as saying by BBC.

Former England cricketers were quick to respond with messages of support as the news first emerged.

James has played seven Tests for England.
