Pallekele: Sri Lanka conceded a lead of 86 runs after bowling out Australia for 203 in their first innings on Day 2 of the first Test match.

Sri Lanka were dealt another blow early in the innings when Starc trapped Kusal Perera in the third over of the innings. The delivery was fullish and the left-hander was beaten for pace.

It's all over for Australia for the first innings. Sandakan picked his fourth wicket of the match when Lyon was trapped in front of the wicket. Australia have a lead of 86 runs and Angelo Mathews should be very proud of the way his bowlers put a fight today. But considering the way the pitch has behaved so far, these 86 runs could be crucial for the visitors.

Voges resistance came to an end when he was bowled ball a superb delivery from Pradeep, which got some part of his bat and hit the stumps. Starc is the new man in and Australia now lead by 67 runs.

LUNCH: Australia lost two more wickets in the last 12 overs and Sri Lanka would be happy with the way they have bounced back on the second day.


Rangana Herath picked his fourth wicket of the day when wicketkeeper Nevill holed one straight to mid-on. Earlier, Sandakan picked his first wicket of the match as he bowled Marsh, who was looking set to play a big knock.

Voges and Marsh continue to frsutrate Lankan bowlers with a good-looking partnership. They do not look in a hurry to score runs and are shaping their innings well. Mathews needs his bowlers to pull up their socks and get another breakthrough as the visitors now lead by 12 runs with eight wickets remaining.

After two quick blows early in the day, Voges and Marsh are in the process of rebuilding the innings. Both the batsmen are playing crucial knocks for Australia at the moment and have already added unbeaten 35 runs for the fifth wicket. The visitors now trail by just 12 runs and they look all set for a decent lead unless the Lankans pull off something miraculous here.

Rangana Herath gave Lankans the much-needed start as he dismissed Steve Smith and Usman Khawaja in his first two overs of the day. The hosts will be relieved since both the set batsmen have been dismissed. Smith threw his wicket away as he shimmied down the track, was deceived by the flight and stumped. In his next over, Herath bamboozled Khawaja with a very quick delivery and the left-hander was clueless there.

The first day was dominated by bowlers as 12 wickets fell in total.


While Australia put a tremendous show to bowl out Sri Lanka for just 117 runs in front of their home spectators, Lankan bowlers too gave their team glimmer of hope as they dismissed David Warner (0) and Joe Burns (3) with just seven runs on board.


Usman Khawaja (25*) and Steve Smith (28*) resurrected the innings from there and added an unbeaten 59-run stand for the third-wicket partnership.


Australia now trail by just 51 runs and with eight wickets remaining, Angelo Mathews will have to motivate his bowlers to get several breakthroughs in the first session for a comeback.
