The incident occurred in the final over of Day 1 when Doug Bracewell clean bowled Adam Voges who shouldered his arms, misjudging the line of the delivery.

But the on-field umpire Richard Illingworth signalled a no-ball, handing the right-hander a lifeline.

Replays clearly showed that the pacer's delivery was legal since his heel was just on the line.

Annoyed by the umpiring error, Kiwi skipper Brendon McCullum was seen having a chat with Illingworth when the day's play ended.

The home side will be left fuming if Voges, who was unbeaten on 7 at stumps, goes on to play a decisive knock in the Test on Day 2.

The final ODI between the two sides also witnessed a controversy due an umpiring decision.

Australian all-rounder Mitchell Marsh was bizarrely dismissed in the Chappell-Hadlee decider when the ball ricocheted from his bat to his foot then back to the bowler Matt Henry. When Henry caught the ball, he made a half-hearted appeal before walking back to prepare for his next delivery.

The umpires took action only after witnessing the crowd's vociferous reaction to a replay on the giant screen which showed the ball had not hit the ground.

There were heated exchanges on the field between players from both sides after Marsh was finally given out.
