After winning the toss under, Mohammad Azharuddin opted to bat first, and India lost Sadapoppan Ramesh in the first over itself. But Ganguly, along with Rahul Dravid changed the course of the match, posting a 318-run stand for the second wicket. Their stand in 45 overs was the highest in any limited-overs international at the time.

Ganguly scored 183 off 158 balls (17x4s, 7x6s), and Dravid made 145 in 129 balls (17x4s,1x6) as India posted 373. India won the match by 157.
