The 26-year-old scalped Sri Lankan left-hander Kusal Perera (54) off the final ball of the 46th over. He followed it with two consecutive wickets of Angelo Mathews (57) and Thisara Perera (12) in the 48th.

It was a rare hat-trick as none of Faulkner's victims were dismissed for a duck.

Faulkner's figures were 3-45 as Sri Lanka posted a formidable 288-run total in Colombo.

Mathews and his men then bowled Australia out for 206 in reply to win by 82 runs and level the five-match series at 1-1.

Bruce Reid, Anthony Stuart, Brett Lee, Clint McKay and Dan Christian are the other five Australians with ODI hat-tricks.
