AFC Cup: Bengaluru FC stutter 1-2 against Lao Toyota FC, stylish Mohun Bagan AC emerge victorious
C K Vineeth scored for Bengaluru in the 90th minute.
New Delhi: Bengaluru FC missed their skipper Sunil Chhetri badly as the I-League club began their campaign at the AFC Cup football tournament on a disappointing note, losing 1-2 to Lao Toyota FC, at Vientiane (Laos) on Wednesday.
On the other hand Mohun Bagan thrashed Maldives side Marziya Sports and Recreation Club 5-2 in a goal-fest in Guwahati.
Bagan continued their positive run this season and the win comes as a big respite after the 0-6 thrashing in the second match of the Asian Champions League earlier to Chinese club Shandong Luneng FC.
Cornell Glenn and Jeje Lalpekhua scored a brace each with Sony Norde hitting one goal as Sanjoy Sen's side emerged big winners. For the visitors Ahmed Imaaz scored in the 61st minute and they got an own goal off Bagan player Raju Gaikward in the 77th minute.
It was mostly an one sided affair in Guwahati as Bagan attackers enjoyed their dominance.
Earlier, Bengaluru FC's attacking force lacked the guile and penetration to break Lao Toyota FC.
A disastrous start awaited Ashley Westwood's side as Japanese striker Kazuo Homma gave the hosts a deserved lead as early as in the third minute of the game at the New Laos National Stadium.
The hosts doubled their lead in the 35th minute through a strike from midfielder Phatthana Syvilay to take a 2-0 lead at half time.
Bengaluru FC finally managed to pull back one through C K Vineeth but it was too late.
Bengaluru FC had finished last in their group despite going unbeaten in the 2015 AFC Cup edition.
