New Delhi: It seems scoring five goals have become a trend in European leagues. After Robert Lewandowski's five goals for Bayern Munich against Wolfsburg in Bundesliga last month, Manchester City forward Sergio Aguero achieved the feat against Newcastle United in a Premier League clash on Saturday.

The Argentine striker scored five goals in a space of 20 minutes of either half in front of a packed Etihad Stadium crowd. He opened the scoring in the 42nd minute of the game, and completed the hat-trick five minutes after restart. Serbian Aleksandar Mitrovic scored the first goal of the match, in the 18th minute, to give the visitors a surprising lead before the start of Aguero show.

His new team-mate Kevin De Bruyne from Wolfsburg broke the scoring sequence in the 53rd minute, before the former Atletico Madrid man scored two more goals in the 60th and 62nd minute.

In that incredible 20-minute period, Aguero had nine touches and scored five goals. But, City manager Manuel Pellegrini substituted his star player soon after achieving the feat, with Wilfred Bony.

The 27-year-old thus became the fifth player in EPL to score five goals in a single match, after Jermain Defoe (for Tottenham Hotspur against Wigan Athletic on on November 22, 2009), Alan Shearer (for Newcastle United against Sheffield Wednesday on September 19, 1999), Andy Cole (for Manchester United against Ipswich Town on March 4, 1995) and Dimitar Berbatov (for Manchester United against Blackburn Rovers on November 27, 2010).

In the pre-EPL era, Derby County's Roger Davies against Luton Town, Ipswich Town's Alan Brazil against Southampton, Liverpool's Ian Rush against Luton Town and Arsenal's Tony Woodcock against Aston Villa have all scored five goals in a single match.

In the process, Aguero also equaled Carlos Tevez's Argentinean goal-scoring record in EPL with 84 goals apiece. Interestingly, he missed a penalty against Tottenham Hotspur in 2014 after scoring four goals, thus squandering his first chance to score five goals in a single match.

City won the match 6-1 and regained top spot in the league table, albeit provisionally. After eight matches, City have 18 points, one more than their Manchester neigbours United. Louis van Gaal's side will travel to Emirates to play Arsenal tomorrow in the gameweek eight.
