According to a report in the Independent on Sunday, the sacked Chelsea manager sent the Red Devils a six-page letter putting his case forward as a replacement for beleaguered Louis van Gaal.

Out of work since being sacked as Chelsea's manager last month, the Portuguese is said to have explained in his letter as to how would he be prepared to adapt his style of management to suit the demands at Old Trafford, and how he would seek to overhaul the squad.

While van Gaal has been repetitive in saying he is not willing to step down as coach, United's 1-0 loss at home against Southampton could make matters worse for the Dutchman and speculations are rife that he will have to leave the club in the summer.

The timing of Mourinho`s reported contact with United is interesting as frustrated Old Trafford fans booed their team off the pitch in the aftermath of their latest setback.

Mourinho has been linked with the United job before when Alex Ferguson left to be replaced by David Moyes in 2013.
