Believe it or not, his reported 'love letter' to Manchester United have put his super-agent Jorge Mendes in a spot of bother, having to come out in defence of his embattled client.

Mendes on Sunday described claims that his Portuguese compatriot has written a detailed letter to United in a bid to become their next manager as "absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd".

"It does not occur to anyone that a coach like Jose Mourinho can write letters to clubs offering their services. It is absolutely ridiculous and totally absurd," Mendes said on his management company`s website, www.gestifute.com.

Mourinho, one of the world`s most successful managers, has been consistently linked with the job at Old Trafford since he was dismissed by Chelsea in December.

And the situation at Theatre of Dreams is no better, with England's most successful club struggling under Louis van Gaal.

A report in the Independent early today claimed that the former Real Madrid and Inter Milan manager had written a lengthy letter to United, offering his services to the club.

The report, which described it as a 'love letter', also claimed that the two-times Champions League-winner also went into the details on how to improve the club's fortune and restore Red Devils' storied attacking flair.

In between, United suffered their six league defeat of the season yesterday against Southampton, and van Gaal's team was booed off the pitch by supporters at Old Trafford.
