Sydney: A Melbourne radio station has suspended its commentator for his on-air attack on WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange’s mother, where he shouted an offensive Nazi slogan.
Radio station 3AW suspended John Michael Howson after he yelled ‘Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil! Sieg Heil!’ to Christine Assange when she called him a pig and refused to give an interview on the station’s Sunday Morning program.
According to the Herald Sun, 3AW has suspended Howson from air for four weeks. Howson has apologised for his comments, the report added. “Yesterday on the Sunday Morning program we discussed the matter of Julian Assange and his decision to seek sanctuary in the embassy of Ecuador in London,```` the report quoted Howson, as saying.
"During that discussion I made offensive comments by citing the Nazi salute, he said, adding: "I unreservedly apologise for saying what I said”. “I did not intend to imply that our guests or anyone shares the views of the Nazi party or seeks to control free speech,” Howson said. According to the report, 3AW General Manager Shane Healy said Howson was left in no doubt that his comments were considered ‘completely unacceptable’.
