According to reports, the marriage is likely to take place early next year around February-March.

Sonam is the daughter of legendary Indian defender Subrata Bhattacharya, who captained Kolkata giants Mohun Bagan.

Interestingly, Bhattacharya was one of the guiding figures when Chhetri was starting his professional career at Mohun Bagan.

It's reported that Chhetri flew down to Kolkata on Thursday to confirm the talks with Sonam’s father.

“Yes, Sunil came and met us. They have been in a relationship and I think they should be happy for the rest of their lives,” Bhattacharya, told Hindustan Times.

“I have seen Sunil grow as a footballer. I got him to Kolkata Maidan in 2003 and he has improved as a footballer. I can compare him to Xavier Pius of our times.

“He is a good lad and I like his innocence,” Bhattacharya added.

According to reports, Sonam runs two hotels in Kolkata's Salt Lake area and is a business management graduate from Scotland.

Chhetri will be one of the many Indian sportstars who are entering the married life. Cricketers Yuvraj Singh and Ishant Sharma got married recently.

Also, global superstar Lionel Messi is also reported to be readying for a new innings in his life.

Reports surfaced yesterday that the Argentina footballer was all set to tie the knot with long-time girlfriend Antonella Roccuzzo early next year.
