Kolkata: Defending champions Atletico de Kolkata recieved a setback ahead of their ISL football tournament opener against Chennaiyin FC as central defender Jose Miguel Gonzalez Rey is rendered doubtful for the match after sustaining an injury.
Popularly known as Josemi, who played a key role in the central defence alongside Arnab Mondal in their title winning campaign in the inaugural edition, has sustained a knee injury and the team think tank has virtually ruled him out.
"He really played a big role with us last time, his absence would be a big blow for us. But he is someone who can lead from the sidelines," Mondal said on the eve of their departure to Chennai.
Having returned from a grueling pre-season training camp in Spain, the defending champions have struggled for match practice with their home venue Vivekananda Yuva Bharati Krirangan not ready before October 8.
ATK today trained at the artificial surface of Vidyasagar Krirangan in Barasat on the outskirts of the city while previously they made use of Mohun Bagan's facilities at the Maidan.
"Indeed it has hampered our practice but we are positive to do well in Chennai. The pressure would be on them (Chennaiyin FC) as they would play at home," Mondal said at the team hotel.
The team will leave for Chennai tomorrow morning.
