Messi, who is usually very reliable from the spot, yet again had to deal with disappointment at the final hurdle after a stellar tournament.

The Barcelona star is believed to have made his retirement decision out of pure frustration and agony. Hence there is every chance he will be back in national colours at Russia 2018.

The five-time Ballon dÓr winner however is not the only great to have missed a crucial penalty at a major tournament.

In fact Messi is in elite company, which includes the likes of Roberto Baggio, Zico and Michel Platini.

Here is a list of the three-most talked about penalty misses in football history.

Roberto Baggio (Italy) vs Brazil at 1994 World Cup

USA 1994 was all about the magical midfielder. Unfortunately, Italian football's golden boy blasted the ball over the crossbar in the final shootout.

Zico (Brazil) vs France at 1986 World Cup

'White Pele' missed from the spot in the quarterfinal against France. He then made amends converting his penalty in the shootout.

Michelle Platini (France) vs Brazil at 1986 World Cup

Unlike Zico, Les Blues' inspirational midfielder missed in the shootout in that match. France however went on to win this iconic duel.
