The historic Nehru Bhavan housing the UPCC headquarters was the hub of activities on Sunday with party stalwarts thronging the office to cast their ballots in the party presidential election. The delegates flanked by their supporters had started gathering in the PCC office since early in the morning to exercise their franchise in an election made interesting by the presence of the AICC President Sonia Gandhi and senior Congress leader Jitendra Prasada in the fray.
Barring a scuffle between Congress workers and rapid action force in Lucknow in which seven partymen were injured, polling for Congress presidential elections which pitted incumbent Sonia Gandhi against rebel leader Jitendra Prasada ended on Sunday by and large peacefully with massive turnout across the country.
While Prasada accompanied by a handful of his supporters had reached the UPCC headquarters early in the morning, Gandhi arrived at 12 noon to exercise her franchise.
The slogan of `Sonia Gandhi zindabad` and `Sonia tum sangharsh karo hum tumhare saath hain` went into the air as she casted her vote.
Senior Congress leaders including General Secreatary of the party Ambika Soni, Makhan Lal Fotedar, Salman khurshid, Mahaveer Prasad and former Union Minister N D Tewari were also present at the PCC office.
The scene inside and outside the Nehru Bhavan was quite tense with the supporters of Prasada and Gandhi putting up banners and posters on every available space.
